High-end Leica camera confirmed for the Huawei P9

Remember when Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei announced that it had formed a partnership with premium German camera company Leica? Many anticipated that this collaboration might have something to do with he upcoming Huawei P9 flagship and it turns out that those hunches were correct.

Today, Huawei officially acknowledged that the two companies have been closely working together on the P9. The Huawei P9 has been leaked numerous times with a dual rear camera configuration, although we still don’t know exactly what input Leica has had in development. The company has been hyping up its new camera technology, so it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how good the P9’s camera turns out to be.

“We are going to launch our P9 flagship phone very soon and this is a product that we worked with Leica to produce,” – Huawei deputy chairman Guo Ping

The announcement came as Huawei declared its most recent annual financial results. The growing smartphone company saw a 33 percent jump in year on year net profit in 2015, reaching CNY 36.9 billion ($5.7 billion). The company’s smartphone division sold 108 million units last year and also saw its first major US handset release with the Nexus 6P.

2016 is going to be an important year for Huawei, and the company will be looking to its next flagship to further its market position in China and open up new growth opportunities abroad. The Huawei P9, complete with Leica camera components, is expected to be unveiled at an event scheduled for April 6th.
