ZTE unveils the V81, an 8-inch iPad mini challenger with Jelly Bean on top

ZTE V81

After covering up all its 5-inch smartphone bases with the awesome Grand S and the more mundane V987, ZTE is taking its world domination quest to the next level – tablets.

The first Android-based slate from ZTE to see daylight in 2013 is for now called V81 and seems to take more spec cues from the V987 than the Grand S. Still, the V81 might be worth our while, as it’s one of the first tabs in the Android décor to sport an 8-inch display.

And if that’s not enough to make Apple quiver, the V81’s panel also comes with the same 4:3 aspect ratio and 1,024 x 768 pixels resolution as the iPad Mini. Lawsuit magnet? Maybe, although Cupertino might have bigger fish to fry and much more powerful 8-inchers to be afraid of.

After all, the ZTE V81 only comes with a dual-core 1.4 GHz processor (unknown make and model), 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of on-board memory. Meanwhile, rumor has it Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 8.0 will be rocking a quad-core 1.6 GHz chip, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage.

ZTE’s 7-incher doesn’t look that hot from a design standpoint either, being anything but slim or elegant. We don’t know the tab’s weight yet, but at an 11.07 mm thickness we’re not too hopeful. Not even the 3,700 mAh battery can bring smiles on our faces, considering that the Nexus 7 has a 4,325 mAh “ticker”.

So does that mean the V81 is doomed and bound for failure? Not so fast, because we’re yet to hear about pricing. And that’s one department where we know ZTE can do wonders.

There are also dual cameras on the 8-incher (a 2 MP on the back and an 0.3 MP on the front), microSD support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, USB, GPS and even HDMI. Finally, the entire package is buttered real good with some smooth Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Not too shabby for what could be a $150 tab, right?

Now all we have to do is wait for ZTE to detail the V81 some more (maybe at MWC, maybe earlier) and change that easily forgettable name. How about it, are you willing to give this fellow a shot?
