The Aakash 2 was officially unveiled back in late-2012 with a price tag of just $22. The catch was that the device was only available in India and had such a low price point thanks to government subsidization, with the tablet being aimed at students.

A little over a year later, the Aakash 2 is now making its way to the UK and U.S. markets under the name UbiSlate 7Ci. Even more intriguing is that it’s price tag is just $37.99 in the US, and £30 in the UK.

As you can imagine, a sub-$50 tablet isn’t exactly going to blow anyone away when it comes to hardware specs. The 7Ci is powered by a 1GHz Cortex A7 CPU with just 512MB of RAM. The 7-inch display has a resolution of only 800×480, and there’s just 4GB of storage space. On the bright side, there is microSD for memory expansion.

Ultimately, you’re always better off spending more on an Android device, but it’s still great to see that there are options out there for all budgets.

There’s also Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich on board, which is a step up from the Gingerbread that originally came with Datawind’s Aakash tablets.

We know what you’re thinking: why would anyone buy this?

For not even $100 more you can find much more capable devices like the Hisense Sero 7 Pro, which will provide a considerably better Android experience. Of course not everyone can afford to spare $100 – $200 for a consumption device, and that’s who the UbiSlate 7Ci is aimed at.

As a very basic e-reader and web browser, the 7Ci should still be able to get the job done, even if you have to put up with some occasional lag along the way. The tablet could also be good for very young children or those that only plan on using the device on rare occasions only — such as traveling. At sub-$50, the UbiSlate 7Ci might even prove to be a fun toy for those that want to tinker around without worrying about breaking it.
