UK retailers discount 16 GB Nexus 7 in preparation for the 32 GB version

Although we can’t really see the iPad mini competing in the same league with Asus and Google’s Nexus 7, Apple’s new “affordable” tablet is still a serious threat for the Android world. But what is Google to do about that?

It’s way too early for an update, as the first gen Nexus 7 has only been released in July, so the only logical option seems to be a software tweak and/or a refresh. And Google might just do both at the same time, with rumors of a 3G 32 GB Nexus 7 and Android 4.2 being released on October 29 increasing in intensity and credibility.

The existence of a Nexus 7 with double the internal storage as right now is yet to be officially confirmed, but a couple of British retailers seem to be prepping for something. Otherwise, how can you explain that they’ve cut the price of the 16 GB model of the 7-incher despite it being thought to have been at a dramatic low point already?

The discounts are not drastic, but again we are talking about a gadget that brought almost absolutely no profit to its manufacturers. Comet is the UK pricing champion, having the 16 GB Nexus 7 available online for £179.99, which is £20 less than before.

The retailer is throwing in free next day delivery to sweeten the deal even more, but if you choose to pick it up from a brick and mortar store you’ll have to rake in an extra £10.

Another online store that’s offering the Nexus 7 with 16 GB of memory on the cheap is Currys, though this particular retailer will ask you to pay £189.99 no matter if you get the tab online or collect it in a store. Meanwhile, UK’s Play Store still has the tab up for grabs for £199, which is anything but a bad deal as well.

There seems to not be any question about it anymore – the 32 GB Nexus 7 is coming, ladies and gents. But what will the tab cost? Will the Wi-Fi only version go for as less as £250 in the UK? Even less? How about the 3G version, will Google be able to price that at under £300?
