Known in the States as the Excite 10, Toshiba’s latest 10-inch tablet has finally been made official in Europe. The AT300, as it will be called on the Old Continent, will come with pretty much the same tech specs as the US version, but still doesn’t have an official price tag next to its name.
We also don’t know exactly where will the AT300 be made available in Europe and when you should expect it to start selling, but the UK and Italian releases have been confirmed and we are fairly positive that we will be seeing the tablet all around Germany, France, and other important countries by the end of Q2.
Powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, the new AT300 is intended to offer a perfect balance between high performance, great looks, portability and decent pricing. The strong chipset is coupled with 1 GB of RAM, so, at least as far as power goes, things should be more than satisfying.
In terms of design, you can’t complain either, as the 10-incher is made of brushed aluminum, but still manages to weigh only 590 grams (around 1.3 pounds), while measuring a mere 8.9 mm (0.35 inches) in thickness.
You could complain a bit about the tablet’s display, which isn’t perfect and features a 1280 x 800 pixels resolution. Then again, it does come with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass, which almost makes up for the sub-par resolution (compared with the Transformer Prime TF700T, for example).
Other features include dual 5 MP/2 MP cameras, WiFi b/g/n connectivity, Bluetooth 3.0, a full-sized SD card slot, a microUSB connector, microHDMI, and a battery that’s supposed to go for ten hours between charges, according to manufacturer claims. In terms of storage space, the European version of the new Toshiba tablet will only come in two flavors, with 16 and 32 GB of on-board memory, dropping the 64 GB model available in the US.
Finally, as far as software is concerned, the AT300 runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, features full access to the Google Play store, but does come with a lot of pre-loaded software, including some Toshiba-specific and third-party apps, and a redesigned, “holographic” user interface, which might bug some of you.
While it has given up the Excite name it bears in the US, the AT300 still looks like an exciting tablet and, if it will be priced “fairly”, I am sure it will catch up in Europe.
