Google I/O is a little over a month away, and the speculation surrounding the “Nexus 5,” the rumored five devices Google is set to reveal this year, is picking up steam. Talks of a low-cost but high spec’ed Google Nexus Tablet have been making the rounds for a while now, and we have some new information that sheds some light on what we can expect from this device.
A “trusted source” leaked to technobuffalo that ASUS will be manufacturing Google’s first Nexus tablet, with the 7″ slate being powered by a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. The source further added that the device will not only be announced at Google I/O, but Google will also be handing out the device to the developers who attend the conference. This new report comes to confirm what we’ve already been suspecting about the Nexus tablet for a while.
Let’s look at some other recent information leaks and facts, that suggest that this latest report is accurate:
- Just the other day we’ve heard that Google plans to ship 600,000 Nexus tablets in June. With Google I/O at the end of June, this might very well be true, and enable Google to have the device in stores at some point in July.
- There have been a lot of rumors suggesting the Google will be teaming up with ASUS to produce its first Nexus tablet. The cancellation of the highly-anticipated $250 ASUS MeMo 370T, which is said to have very similar, if not identical, specifications with the Nexus tablet, is further testament to the fact.
- At a recent Nvidia shareholders conference, Nvidia VP Rob Csonger unveiled Project Kai, a tablet platform that would let OEMs create tablets that cost just $199, powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor. This falls perfectly in line with Google’s plan to release a low-cost/high-specs device, to compete against the hugely popular Amazon Kindle Fire.
We are certainly getting a better idea of what to expect from the Nexus tablet, and I am very excited to see what Google has to offer! Come end-June, it looks like I’ll know exactly what my next tablet is going to be.
