A battle between two extra-sized phones is about to commence, courtesy of Samsung and LG. The former, of course, is the undisputed leader in the phablet category, with the Galaxy Note. While LG hasn’t been too successful with the Optimus Vu, partly due to the fact that it has yet to cross over to another country, LG is betting on the Optimus Vu 2 to knock the champion down.
As recently reported, Samsung is planning to reveal the Galaxy Note 2 during IFA 2012, which will be held from August 31 – September 5 in Berlin, Germany. But according to the Korean newspaper DDaily, both Samsung and LG will unveil their phablets sometime before the start of the international expo through separate events, with LG expected to be first to make the announcement.
The only thing that has been confirmed about the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is that it will be shipping with a bigger 5.5-inch display, while the overall size of the device is expected to remain the same. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy Note 2 will pack the quad-core Exynos 4 Quad processor inside, though some are clinging on the hope that it’ll ship with Exynos 5250.
The LG Optimus Vu 2, meanwhile, is expected to boast the same 5-inch display with 1024 x 768 resolution as its predecessor. It’ll be powered by a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
The same report mentioned that the Galaxy Note 2 and Optimus Vu 2 will be available in South Korea in September. An international rollout, for the Galaxy Note 2 at least, shouldn’t be too far off from its domestic debut.
We don’t think that announcing the LG Optimus Vu prior to the Galaxy Note 2 will necessarily steal the latter’s thunder. What LG should do is emphasize some key differences between the two, such as the Optimus Vu’s (and its expected sequel’s) 3:4 aspect ratio. And, yeah, It won’t hurt to make the Optimus Vu and Vu 2 available in other parts of the world, either.
