What traits must a tablet possess in order to earn the title of ”the best Android tablet?” Is it hardware? A quad-core CPU, or a large, high-resolution display that bedazzles your eyes? Or how about a rock bottom price? Or, is it software like Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a slim-easy to use overlay? Do you enjoy a device with superb build quality and top-notch materials?
No matter which trait you stand by, the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T is sure to tickle your fancy.
Amidst the release of their Google flagship Nexus 7 (an excellent device), Asus has taken the time to craft one of the absolute best tablets I’ve ever had the pleasure of using. The Transformer Pad Infinity is an absolute joy to use, and constantly boasts its many attributes. But, as always, I’ll go ahead and leave it up to you to decide if the TF700T is up to par. Let’s check it out!
Hardware
The Asus TF700T is fully encased in high-quality aluminum, and feels extremely sturdy. The back of the tablet features a circular pattern ingrained into the chassis. Very beautiful, I must say!
Aside from the impressive build quality, the Infinity’s specs include:
- Size: 263 x 180.8 x 8.3 mm; 586 g
- Display: 10.1″ Super IPS+ LCD touchscreen, 1920 x 1200 pixels, 224 ppi
- Processor: Nvidia quad-core Tegra 3, 1.6 GHz (highest stock clock of the Tegra 3 yet!)
- Memory: 1GB RAM DDR3
- Storage: 32/64GB, microSD slot expandable
- Connectivity: USB, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, micro HDMI
- Camera: 8MP rear facing, 2MP front-facing
- Video: 1080p HD
- OS: Android 4.0.3
- Available with a full mobile dock/keyboard – matching in color
The mobile keyboard dock really improves the tablets usability, and when equipped, transforms the tablet into nothing short of a quad-core netbook. The form factor is exceptionally slim as well.
Software
Ice Cream Sandwich is still the dominating force in the Android ecosystem, and is 100% able to stand up to any task one may throw at it. Rocking Android 4.0.3, the Infinity utilizes Asus’ Waveshare UI, in an attempt to make users’ experience a little easier. The Waveshare UI isn’t as obtrusive as TouchWiz, per se, and stays relatively in-line with AOSP Android. The only theme-ing can be found in the softkeys and the status bar of the tablet.
Also within the status bar rest three power options to augment the Tegra 3′s powerhouse – Power Saver, Balanced, and Performance mode.
The Infinity is a delight to all senses, as it is equipped with Asus’ Sonicmaster technology, a software developed to optimize audio recording and playback.
Display
The gem of this tablet lies in it’s display. The IPS+ display can practically be viewed in all conditions and angles. The LED backlight provides 600nits of high-powered brightness. The IPS+ can be toggled on and off via the status bar, for easy viewing.
I was able to use the tablet outside for a longer period of time than any of my other tablets provided. The IPS+ mode also reduced reflection, a problem I’ve noticed in other Asus tablets.
The 1920 x 1200 resolution is crisp, and makes it somewhat hard to isolate any pixelation.
Performance
The Tegra 3 processor is easily one of the hottest pieces of hardware out there. Asus has been very generous by including the Tegra 3 in many of their newest tablets. The Tegra inside the TF700T holds the highest stock clock speed of any Tegra 3 from the factory, at 1.6Ghz. I found it to be lightning fast, keeping up with games, HD videos, heavy multitasking, and just about anything else I could throw at it.
Benchmark scores set the TF700T below the HTC One X and the original Transformer Prime even after a few re-tests. The real reason behind this though, is that the Infinity Pad offers up a substantially higher resolution display, at 1920×1200. More pixels, more demand on the SoC. In terms of real world performance though, this tablet is blazing fast, and the extra pixels on the popping Super IPS + display make it one of the best displays on the market.
Camera
The 8MP rear-facing camera has been heavily developed and optimized by Asus. Photos look great, and videos gleam with 1080p HD quality. Check out some test shots I took with the rear and front facing cameras.
