Verizon Nexus 7 LTE now available, compatibility update rolling out

Fans of the Nexus 7 tablet that happen to also be Verizon customers are finally in business. Not only is Google pushing out the KVT49L update that will make your LTE capable Android 4.4.2 device compatible with Verizon’s network, but you can get the tablet right from Verizon starting today for $249 on a two year contract.

The LTE Nexus 7 2013 model in question was originally launched last fall with the full expectation of connectivity to all of the major carriers. Many found out the hard way that Verizon determined the device was not compliant with their network security and regulations, and thus refused to certify it for use.

Users cried foul, calling this refusal to activate their devices a violation of the C-block auction agreement. I think I agree, but I really do not know all of the details involved here, and since Google is pushing the update, maybe Verizon wasn’t wrong. A few workarounds got some people running, but most were left with the choice of either living with their WiFi only LTE tablet, or moving to another carrier. But that’s a thing of the past now.

If you would like some more information on Google’s flagship tablet, check out our full review here. We recently sparked the debate that the Nexus 7, and other devices like it, are the sustained future of tablets. Get in there and let us know what you think.

The $249 price for the Verizon Nexus 7 LTE is a $100 savings compared to buying the unit straight from the Google Play Store. We don’t think the savings are worth signing a two year deal, but it may work for your situation, especially if you can add it to your shared plan for just $10/month. For the added benefit of free shipping, some savings on accessories and easier SIM card activation, you can also get the Verizon Nexus 7 LTE for $349 off contract from Verizon’s online store.

We’re closing to a year since the initial launch of the 2013 Nexus 7 — have you been holding off until this day to get one?  Did you have to give up on Verizon LTE and go to another carrier, or you just settled for the WiFi only unit?
