The Medias Tab UL N08-D is the lightest Android tablet out there

Making the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD look like a couple of heavyweights, NTT DoCoMo has launched the world’s lightest Android tablet. Called the NEC Medias Tab UL N08-D, the new device weighs a mere 249 grams and sports a slim 9.9 mm profile. In comparison, the Nexus 7 comes in at 345 grams and the Kindle Fire HD is even heavier at 395 grams.

The Medias Tab UL seems to earn its featherweight title by employing a carbon fiber body usually reserved for modern aircraft construction because its internals certainly aren’t suffering.

A 1.5GHz dual-core processor lies under the hood, powering a 7-inch LCD display with a 1280 x 800 resolution. The Medias Tab UL has two camera – much like its 7-inch rival: a 2-megapixel camera on the front and an 8-megapixel Exmore R back-lit camera taking up the rear. The battery packs 3100mAh and the device ships with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Not related to its slim profile or reduced weight but still worth mentioning, the Medias Tab UL has a few neat software features on board. One is an “HD haptics” vibration mechanism that provides feedback for almost all on-screen elements. The other applies to web browing, allowing the user to view two tabs simultaneously.

If you’re living in Japan, and therefore eligible to order the lightest Android tablet on the market, you can find some guidance via NTT DoCoMo. Would you buy a device just because it’s the lightest? Does that even appeal to you?
