The Sony Xperia Z Ultra has often been criticized by reviewers for its gargantuan size and while others might claim that its this very feature which appeals to them most, there’s no doubting the Z Ultra is absolutely massive in size. So after receiving a Google Play Edition variant last year, Sony looks to be taking the Z Ultra and selling it as the smaller tablet in its lineup as a Wi-Fi only Xperia Z Ultra (model number: SGP412) looks to be on its way.

A Wi-Fi only variant of the Z Ultra popped up last year in the FCC, and now its page has been updated with pictures of the device as well as manuals. The Wi-Fi only Z Ultra will keep the 1080P, 6.4-inch IPS display and Snapdragon 800 chip, as well as being backed by 2 GB of RAM and a slightly smaller 3000mAh battery (the Cellular Data capable Xperia Z Ultra has a 3050mAh battery). The Wi-Fi Only Z Ultra also retains the waterproofing as the FCC pictures show the Z Ultra standing in a shallow pool of water.

Along with the updated FCC page, a driver page for the Wi-Fi only Xperia Z Ultra has also appeared on the Sony website leading us to believe that an official announcement won’t be too far away.

Holding a better hand in comparison with other small tablets when it comes to specs, the Z Ultra could prove to be a fairly decent choice, however, we’ll have to see how Sony prices the device. Fair warning though, Sony’s never been one to play the “race to the bottom” game so don’t expect Nexus 7-like pricing.
