Tasked with the simple premise of “break the grid,” two established creators have coordinated to produce an impressive art project within the restrictions of Google Sheets. Marina Esmeraldo, who is based out of Barcelona, has teamed up with NYC resident Mallory Heyer to produce something truly phenomenal.
The two artists decided to take the restrictions of the spreadsheet medium to an abstract level, focusing on the limits that society implicitly puts on members of the ‘fairer’ sex. Their creation is a celebration of female diversity and agency.

Using conditional formatting and cell resizing, the pair created a massive image that effectively enlists spreadsheet cells as pixels. Formulas generated gradings and distinctions in background and foreground, enabling these two artists to create a complex and colorful image using only a data-management system.
Colossal Media, a Brooklyn-based company that specializes in murals, took it upon themselves to replicate this final creation by coopting the bricks in a Brooklyn wall as pixels and transposing the Sheets-created artwork for all the public to see. The final creation spans 13 by 34 feet and serves as an “inspirational message supporting strong women everywhere.”
