Yesterday an image leaked to the net showing off what appeared to be a kids version of the Galaxy Tab 3, appropriately dubbed the “Galaxy Tab 3 Kids”. At the time we weren’t sure when the tablet would be made official, but as it turns out, we didn’t have to wait long – Samsung has now confirmed the device.

On the outside we have a colorful yellow tablet, which features a protective bumper in order to better protect the device from inevitable drops. On the inside, the Tab 3 Kids is pretty much unchanged from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0.

Like the Tab 3 7.0, the Tab 3 Kids has a 7-inch display with a resolution of just 1024 x 600 and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Some of the other specs include 1GB RAM, a 1MP front cam, 3MP back cam, 8GB internal storage, microSD, Wi-Fi and a highly customized version of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean designed to make the device easier and safer to use for children.

While the unique kids-friendly UI goes a long ways in making this version stand out from the original Tab 3 7.0, there are also some other interesting changes as well.

First, the Tab 3 Kids has a robust parental control system and even a timer, so parents can limit how long their children are playing with the Tab 3 Kids. Once the timer runs out, you’ll need to input a passcode to keep on using the device.

Second, the Galaxy Tab Kids 3 has its own special stylus, called the C Pen. Similar to Samsung’s S Pen, the stylus allows your kids to draw directly on the display, without using their fingers.

Third, Samsung will also have an optional kickstand for the Tab 3 Kids (pictured below), which will be available in a variety of different colors.

When’s it coming, and how much will it set you back?

For now, Samsung is keeping mum about the pricing of the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids, though a price around $199 wouldn’t be too surprising.

As for the release time frame, the tablet will first arrive in Korea in early September. Shortly thereafter, the device will make its way over to Europe, the United States, China, Africa, Southeast Asia and even South America. In other words, Samsung has big (global) plans for its first entry into the children’s tablet market.

What do you think of Sammy’s new children’s tablet, impressed or not?
