Innovation never ceases to amaze.
Many of us love listening to music or podcasts during the day, and there are times when drowning out the world is exactly you want to do. In other situations however, this can be inconvenient or even dangerous. Often you need to be aware of your surroundings, such as when you’re on the road.
Batband is the answer. It allows you to listen to your tunes or take calls, whilst keeping your ears free for situational awareness.
How does Batband work?
We’d like to say witchcraft, but the real answer is bone conduction.
Transducers in Batband emit sound waves at a frequency that can be conducted through the bones of the skull. These sound waves are picked up by your inner ear, keeping your outer ear free. Clever stuff.
You might be wondering if this means other people can hear it too. Well, the designers say that “its discreet use means that any vocal content you receive is nearly inaudible to outsiders”. We would guess that means it’s not quite as silent as in-ear headphones, but suitable for use in most places outside a library.
In any event, it’s a novel solution to a real-world problem, which is presumably why it raised $1.6 million on Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
