MEEP! is a rugged, kid friendly new tablet

If the idea of handing your Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 over to your kids makes you cringe, why not consider getting them a tablet of their own? The new MEEP! tablet by Oregon Scientific is built from the ground up to be used by kids, and it will only cost you $149.

While the MEEP! isn’t going to blow you away with its specs, they’re certainly enough to get the job done. The tablet sports a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 800 x 480, a 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, a 0.3-megapixel camera and a microSD slot to expand its storage. It runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, is Wi-Fi enabled, and can stream to a television via its built-in HDMI port.

What makes MEEP! Special?

So far, it just sounds like a budget tablet, but it includes key features that make it more friendly than most. First, the tablet’s bright orange silicon bumper help kids keep a grip on the MEEP! while also helping it survive falls. The generally rugged build quality helps with this as well.  Bumpers are also available in “Meepadelic Purple” and “Meepto Pink” for kids who aren’t fans of the color orange.

What really makes the MEEP! tablet great for kids are its cloud-based parental controls. By logging into the Parents Portal, parents can control the MEEP! at any time, from anywhere. Parents can set up a whitelist, ensuring that their children can only visit certain websites, and conversely they can set up a blacklist of “bad words” and search terms. Oregon Scientific keeps its own blacklist as well, making sure kids only see appropriate content.

Kid-safe Entertainment

The MEEP! comes with preloaded software like Angry Birds, Toon Goggles and UNO, and kids can download additional kid-safe content from the MEEP! Store. A number of accessories are also available for the tablet, including a joystick and steering wheel for gaming and drum pads, a piano, a microphone and headphones for kids to make music.

If you have kids, do they already have a tablet of their own? Would you consider getting your kids a MEEP! instead of something more breakable?

Oregon Scientific also maintains a “blacklist” of inappropriate content that is updated by moderators on an ongoing basis which parents can add to. In addition, parents can actively monitor their child’s online activity, limit play time duration and provide a virtual allowance for purchasing apps via MEEP! coins without needing to access the physical tablet.

The MEEP! tablet has 4GB of internal storage and a micro SD card slot to install additional memory. Kids can also capture favorite moments – still photos or videos – to share with friends and family via the tablet’s built-in, front-facing camera and can display content on the tablet to a television through HDMI.
