Firmware files found on LG’s website show that the LG V510, which was previously rumored to be a Nexus device, is actually a Google Play edition of the LG G Pad 8.3.

Over the last few weeks, rumors emerged about a so-called Nexus 8, a new tablet that was supposedly in the making from Google. It all started with an apparent Photoshop blunder on Google’s website, in the form of a promotional image that showed a mystery tablet running stock Android. The company was quick to fix the image and deny any rumors of a new Nexus tablet.

But the speculation lived on, and the fact that Google didn’t refresh the 2012 Nexus 10 only added to it. Some thought that Google would launch an 8-inch Nexus to replace or even in addition to a second generation ten-incher.

Yesterday, the usually reliable @evleaks fed the rumor mill with a tip-based report claiming the LG V510, a tablet device that was previously spotted in the Bluetooth SIG database and in benchmark leaderboards, is actually a Nexus device.

Now redditor r/numerlo posted a link to a file present on LG’s open source code distribution site that contains reference to the LG V510, clearly labeled as “G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition”. It’s very hard to believe that the files have been tampered with or that they are some kind of mistake, so, at this point, it’s clear that the LG V510 will be the third Google Play edition device, following the HTC One and Galaxy S4 GPe.

Going for $350, the LG G Pad 8.3 is a very capable little device, with great build quality and some interesting software features. However, not everybody likes the somehow heavy-handed alterations that LG brought to stock Android, so a Google Play edition running AOSP Android may bring the best of two worlds.

Google Play editions devices run stock Android, sell from the Play Store, usually at the same price as the unlocked regular versions, and are guaranteed to receive fast software updates.

For now, we don’t know anything on the availability of the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition. Manufacturers rarely launch new devices this late in the year, but perhaps the special nature of a Google Play edition device warrants an exception. However, it’s more likely that Google and LG will release the G Pad 8.3 GPe early next year.
