When we first saw Project Tango we couldn’t help but be both impressed and excited. There’s no denying that the implications of the 3D-sensing technology are huge, not only advancing projects like NASA’s SPHERES robotic program but also for mainstream consumer use like gaming.

So there lies a big question, when will Tango move beyond its currently developer-oriented focus? During a Google I/O session with ATAP, it was revealed that the first consumer-targeted product will be released in early 2015. Interestingly enough, the Tango-powered device will be a tablet made by LG.

Google didn’t go into any details about when this tablet will arrive, how much it will cost or what kind of hardware it will offer. That said, the first Tango tablet (for developers) was powered by a Tegra K1, so perhaps we’ll see something similar though hopefully at a lower price? It’s really too early to tell, one way or another.

This news follows on the heels of Limbic’s announcement that it will utilize Tango sensors in its upcoming Zombie Gunship Reality game, which you can see in the demo below.
