After making the Android 4.4 KitKat update available for various Nexus devices including the Wi-Fi versions of the Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013 models) and Nexus 10, Google has posted KitKat factory images for all its Nexus handsets and tablets.

The official over-the-air (OTA) downloads may not be available for certain devices, including the Nexus 4 and the cellular versions of the two Nexus 7 models, but their respective factory images are available, which means users can manually install the updates themselves.

We’re looking at Android 4.4 version KRT16O that’s available for download from Google – that’s the same firmware version we showed you the other day for the Nexus 10.

We’ll also remind you that Google rolled out an update to its Search app the other day, which makes it easier for users to unofficially use the Nexus 5’s Google Experience Launcher on any Nexus device, even if the company doesn’t officially support it.

However, we’ll point out that whatever happens with your devices during the installation process, or while installing unofficial APKs falls under your responsibility, and that we don’t encourage you to go down this route.

On the other hand, the fact that the KitKat factory images and drivers for the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are now officially available means that custom ROM developers also have a reason to smile.
