Barnes & Noble adds Android apps

Bookseller chain Barnes & Noble announced the addition of Android-based games and a basic web browser to its nook ereader device. Debuting in conjunction with the release of the nook v1.3 software update, the Android games include Chess and Sudoku, each with multiple levels of difficulty–according to Barnes & Noble, players control the games using using the color touchscreen as the game board appears on the device’s E Ink display. In addition, nook v1.3 includes a beta web browser allowing users to surf the Internet and check email while connected via WiFi. Both games and the web are accessible from the nook’s updated home screen, as is the new Read in Store feature, which enables nook owners visiting Barnes & Noble brick-and-mortar locations to peruse ebooks and periodicals for free.

Barnes & Noble began shipping the Android-powered nook in February. Offering both 3G and WiFi access, the $259 device includes access to more than a million ebooks, newspapers and magazines.
