Asus has been dominating the Android tablet market in recent months. From the incredible Nexus 7, to the ever-popular line of Transformer Pads, Asus has really opened the door to a new realm of tablet computing. This leads me to ask, which Asus tablet is the all-around best?

When asking this question, it’s important to consider price, hardware, software, accessories, and many other options. I’ve narrowed the candidates down to the Transfromer Pad TF300T and the Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T. Both devices have incredibly advantageous traits. From their 10-inch display, to their optional keyboard dock, it only seemed right to pit these powerhouses head-to-head in another Android Authority smackdown!

Now let’s check out some of the cold, hard specs.

Display

While both are sporting a brilliant IPS display, the TF700T Infinity’s IPS+ display really boasts clarity and brightness. Simply tap the IPS+ icon for an extra 250 nits of brightness over the TF300T. This really helps with outdoor viewing and pesky reflection issues. The 1920 x 1200 resolution of the Infinity Pad outdoes the 1280 × 800 resolution in the TF300t, but both are crystal-clear and downright incredible to use.

Software

Each device is rocking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the Asus Waveshare UI. The Waveshare UI is a minimalist overlay, leaving many original elements of AOSP present. Each tablet powers the OS with lightning speed. Asus packs some native applications and widgets into each device. Below is a shot of the Asus Waveshare UI.

Design

This is where we notice the largest difference between the two tablets. The TF700T Infinity is wrapped in high-grade aluminum, whereas the TF300T is constructed using plastic. The Infinity’s metal chassis is polished and swirled for effect, and stays surprisingly cool during intense use.

Both devices’ build quality is exceptional and overlooks nothing.

The additional keyboard dock is constructed using the same material, and the form factor is extremely attractive and thin. The TF700T with its dock are slightly thinner that the TF300T and its respective dock.

Performance

The Tegra 3 processor is HOT! (figuratively). It has been taking the Android scene by storm, pushing the boundaries of tablet and smartphone performance. Each of these tablets is packing the Tegra 3′s quad-core powerhouse, but the TF300T has a factory clock of 1.2Ghz, basically the norm for most devices, while the Infinity is packing 1.6Ghz, the highest clock speed available for the Tegra 3.

Now, benchmark scores may be a little deceiving, because the higher-clocked Tegra within the Infinity, we must remember, is pushing a heck of a lot more pixels on the TF700T than on the TF300T. Nonetheless, each tablet glides through games, HD videos, web browsing, photo taking, and a slew of other taxing activities with ease.

Camera

Both devices are sporting a whopping 8MP camera in the rear, with the TF700T having an LED for flash picture taking. The TF700T also possesses a 2MP front facing camera, while the TF300T snaps away with a 1.3MP front facing shooter.

Each camera was running the stock settings. Asus has spent a lengthy amount of time perfecting the cameras, and as one who actually often uses his tablet camera, I must say that they are a joy to use.

Pricing

The Asus TF300T goes for $345 for the 16GB model, and around $375-400 for the 32GB model. The Asus TF700T goes for $500 for the 32GB model, and $600 for the 64GB model. If you are making your decision based upon price, ask yourself if the aluminum body, enhanced screen, and LED flash are worth $100, because those are essentially the only prominent differences.

Overview

Each device is a complete powerhouse, and you really cannot go wrong no matter which you choose. The TF300T sacrifices some of the build quality that the Infinity brings to the table, but is still one of the better tablets available today. So, which is it? The Super IPS+ packing, aluminum wrapped, 1.6Ghz Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T? Or the lighter, cheaper, quad-core, multitasking machine – the Asus Transformer Pad TF300T?
