Asus now shipping the Transformer Pad 300 for $379

Hard as it may be to suppress the urge to have the latest and greatest gadget, waiting a couple of months for a newer yet less expensive model to be released by your favorite tablet manufacturer can pay off handsomely. Case in point, the Transformer Pad 300 tablet that Asus has made available today, and how the fine specs that the tablet has to offer don’t require you to break the piggy bank.

Asus has kept its word to ship the latest variant of its Transformer lineup, the Transformer Pad 300, on schedule. We don’t think it’s an entry level tablet by any means, but at $379 for the 16GB model, it will surely entice first-time tablet buyers that were put off by the price tags of slates from other manufacturers.

We’re also a fan of Asus’ decision to slap a minimum premium for the higher capacity model, with the 32GB model of the Transformer Pad 300 going for $399, or only $20 more than the 16GB one. This bucks the general trend of upping the price by $50 or more for a few gigs more storage.

So, how does the Asus Transformer Pad 300 differ from its metal-clad Transformer Prime cousin? For starter, gone is said metal cladding, so you’ll have to be content with a plastic body. It still looks sleek and sophisticated, but not just as immaculate. The TF300 is also a bit thicker than the Transformer Prime, though Asus managed to keep the thickness under 10mm, or 9.7mm to be exact.

Looking beyond the exterior, you’ll find the inside of the Asus Transformer Pad 300 to be fairly similar to the Prime. The TF300 comes with 1.2GHz Tegra 3 quad-core chip. There’s a built-in feature to throttle down or overclock the processor (from 600MHz to 1.3GHz, depending on the power mode). Coupled with the 22Wh battery, the Transformer Pad 300 should have no problem lasting for more than 10 hours.  The 1280 x 800 IPS display on the TF300 is not as bright as the Prime, but this shouldn’t be a problem if you use the tablet mainly indoors. You’ll get 1GB RAM, an 8MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, an 1.2MP front camera, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and the same docking ability that you came to know and love from Asus other products.

Asus will only have the dark blue variant of the Transformer Pad 300 on sale for now, but the red and white variants will come in June.
