Now that it’s clear that the world won’t be coming to and end — not today, at least — Asus can go right ahead with its plans to launch its newest products at the outset of 2013.
In case you missed it, the latest info on Google’s collaborator for the Nexus 7 indicates that it plans to release some new, lower-cost tablets with 7-inch screens next year. In fact, even the Nexus 7 itself is expected to be released as cheaper. But the more interesting news is that it has a couple of new cheap models on the horizon.
Pictured above is a tablet which has been identified as the Asus ME172V. Its existence was first revealed through EXIF data from an image that was posted online through Google Picasa. According to the web site of a Russian retail outfit called Oro 1, on which it is already available for pre-order, it belongs to the ME series of Asus tablet devices and rocks entry-level features such as an 800MHz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 7-inch 1024×600 TN-panel screen, a 1-megapixel front camera, and built-in Wi-Fi. It is priced at 6,990 rubles or about $225 USD.
Oro 1, through its ME172V tablet pre-order page, also notes that 3G connectivity won’t be available as a standard built-in feature. However, it mentions that a different tablet called the Asus ME371MG will have built-in 3G as well as a better screen and processor combination. So if you need to have always-on connectivity, then you better keep an eye out for that one.
It isn’t clear when Asus plans to release these two new cheap tablets globally, but current speculation points to an official launch at CES at Las Vegas in 2013.
