It’s better to buy a Galaxy S9 direct from Samsung over your carrier

If you’re in the market for a Samsung Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9 Plus, you might think going to your carrier will get you the best deal. However, you’d be wrong: the best way to go is to buy your device direct from Samsung.

Up until today, buying an unlocked version of the Galaxy S9 was actually cheaper than buying a carrier-locked version (sometimes up to $80 cheaper). Samsung just fixed that on the Samsung store, so now buying an unlocked device or a carrier-locked one is the same price.

But you might want to buy from your carrier because it will get you financing so that you can pay in installments instead of all upfront. Well, Samsung’s got you covered there, too, as it offers financing for purchases over $350. If you were to buy a Galaxy S9, you would get 24 months to pay off the balance in full, without any interest or fees (subject to credit approval, naturally).

To sweeten the deal even more, Samsung currently is offering a Samsung DeX Pad completely free with any Galaxy S9 purchase. The DeX Pad retails for $100, so that’s quite a savings.

Finally, if you’re on AT&T, you definitely have every reason to get your Galaxy S9 from Samsung. Not only can you trade in your current device for up to $300 off, but you automatically save $150 on the Samsung Galaxy S9 or $200 off the Galaxy S9 Plus. With an eligible trade-in, your final price for a Galaxy S9 Plus and a DeX Pad would be a measly $340.

Unless you have AT&T and plan on sticking with it for a good long while, our suggestion is to buy unlocked. You get the phone for the same price and can switch carriers at any point in the future without having to go through the hassle of convincing your current carrier to unlock your device. Since Samsung has unlocked phones at the same price as carrier ones (aside from AT&T), you really have nothing to lose.
