Verizon confirms ICS update for Galaxy Tab 10.1, to come soon OTA

To say it’s frustrating seeing Samsung having such a hard time in its Jelly Bean updating process would be a massive understatement. However, what people seem to forget is that Sammy still needs to tie up some loose ends from the previous major Android update, to version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Several once upon a time high-end Sammy devices are still stuck on Gingerbread or Honeycomb, so, as much as we’d love to see JB spread its tentacles faster, it’s imperative for ICS to make some moves first.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the perfect example of a device that Samsung still has some duties towards, although the GT-P7500 model got the ICS upgrade a month and a half back. The T-Mo version of the Tab 10.1 followed suite a couple of weeks ago, and fortunately the circle seems to finally close now with Verizon ready to roll out Android 4.0.

Big Red hasn’t started the updating process just yet, but has posted two PDF docs on its website, listing the “benefits of the software update” and the “software update instructions”. The upgrade will come OTA (over-the-air) “soon”, so keep your Wi-Fi connections open and your fingers crossed.

The software package will weigh in at 248 MB and upgrade your tab’s firmware to Android 4.0.4, version i905.LP11. Although there’s only a slim chance the update has begun rolling out, if you want to make sure you haven’t missed it you should check the “System Updates” section of the “About device” submenu in the “Settings” menu.

The download and installation will take between 10 and 15 minutes, according to Verizon’s estimations, and will bring you an entire bunch of goodies and treats, including the following:

  • Updated Quick Panel for fast access to Driving Mode and Sync
  • Pinch to Zoom functionality added in homescreen and main menu screen
  • Google Plus integration
  • Google Text-To-Speech Engine
  • Redesigned Gallery app with photo editor
  • New rich and versatile camera capabilities such as continuous focus, zero shutter lag exposure, stabilized image zoom and built-in face detection
  • Wi-Fi Direct support
  • Built-in support for connecting to Bluetooth Health Device Profile (HDP)devices

Besides these specific tweaks and updates, you should also expect improved performance and speed for browsing, multimedia playing and gaming, as well as Ice Cream Sandwich’s redesigned and juicy user interface. Now if only this particular update doesn’t come with the same bugs and glitches the one on T-Mo came with
