UK Google Nexus 7 release date and pricing unveiled, it’s still very affordable

Google announced the Nexus 7 tablet during the first Google I/O keynote and opened up pre-orders for the device in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The Google Nexus 7 is scheduled to start shipping in those countries in July and it will cost $199, or $249 depending on how much storage you require.

But Google will certainly want to sell the device in more countries as fast as possible in order to beat Amazon’s Kindle Fire, a device that’s the main target of the Nexus 7. So far, Amazon was unable to sell the Kindle Fire outside the U.S. as it lacked the necessary licensing deals to bring all of the digital content available to American Kindle Fire buyers to other markets. Without the content, a lesson Google says it learned the hard way last year, the Kindle Fire would not be as attractive anymore.

Recent reports have suggested that the Kindle Fire is coming to Europe, but it looks like the Nexus 7 will beat it to the punch despite launching 7 months after the Amazon tablet.

Today we have more details about the European Nexus 7 release date and pricing and we’re happy to tell you the tablet is coming next month, and it will still be more than affordable. The Nexus 7 will first land in the UK, where it will be available for £159 or £199, which comes down to $247 and $309 for the 8GB and 16GB version, respectively, when converted into U.S. dollars. Sure, it’s a bit more expensive than in the States, but still very affordable, especially considering what it packs under the hood.

In addition to Google, which should be selling the device straight from Google Play in the UK, Carphone Warehouse has already announced that it will carry the 16GB version of the tablet, which will be sold for the same £199. Interested buyers will also be able to get it free of charge, when bundled with a “tethered cont[r]act.”

The tablet will ship at some point in July, although the actual UK Nexus 7 release date is not available at this time.

Heres’ one interesting tidbid dug up from the official Carphone Warehouse press release (available below):

Google Nexus features a 7 inch screen, quadcore processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB memory. It will be the first (and only for the next four months) tablet to run the new Jelly Bean operating system.

Notice how the retailer says the Nexus 7 will be the only tablet to run Jelly Bean for the next four months? While it’s too early to talk about Jelly Bean deployment, it’s still a very interesting statement. Does Carphone Warehouse know something we don’t?

Carphone Warehouse to stock new mini tablet

LONDON June 28, 2012- Yesterday Google announced its first foray into the tablet market with the launch of the compact Google Nexus.

Commenting on the launch, Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, says, “Consumer demand for tablets has exploded in just over two years since the launch of the first generation iPad. The wide range of devices now available means that consumer choice and buying power is stronger than ever. Google clearly believes that there is further scope to grow the market and the competitively priced Google Nexus will serve to make tablet devices more accessible to customers.

“The meteoric rise in the popularity of tablets can be attributed to changes in the way we are using the internet, managing relationships and consuming media. Our lives are more connected and ‘always on’ than ever before. It’s all about convenience; people don’t want to have to go to a desk and sit at a computer to surf the internet, do some online shopping, chat with friends or update a Facebook status – tablet devices lend themselves perfectly to all these activities, all from the comfort of the sofa. Whilst laptops have catered to this need in the past they are slightly cumbersome and awkward; tablets offer the ideal solution and represent the direction home computing is likely to take in the future as demand for clunky home desktop PCs decreases.”

Google Nexus features a 7 inch screen, quadcore processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB memory. It will be the first (and only for the next four months) tablet to run the new Jelly Bean operating system.

The Tablet, made by Asus, will be available from Carphone Warehouse priced at £199.99 standalone or for free on a tethered contact.
