T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 now getting Android 4.0

With all the Galaxy Note 2  frenzy and the pending arrival of the Jelly Bean port for the Galaxy S3, some of you might have thought that Samsung had forgotten all about older gadgets. Well, that’s just not Sammy’s MO, which is easily noticeable again from the timing of the latest ICS rollout.

T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the gadget that has been granted the honor to take the software leap to Android 4.0. Now it is true that T-Mo customers/Tab 10.1 owners have been waiting for this upgrade for quite some time. It’s equally true (and frustrating) that a different Galaxy Tab 10.1 model, namely the GT-P7500, has been upgraded more than a month ago to ICS. Still, I’m sure that the current upgrade will please some Tab users. After all, it’s never too late to taste some ICS goodness, is it?

The nicest surprise at this latest Ice Cream Sandwich rollout is that, although T-Mobile’s support page clearly listed it as an optional manual software update to happen “via Kies only”, a lot of users are reporting that they’ve gotten it OTA (over-the-air).

That means you might not have to go through the hassle of installing Kies, connecting your Tab 10.1 to a PC or Mac and performing the upgrade manually, but only check for system updates, agree to the automatic installation, and then kick back and wait for the magic to happen. If however you’ll need to upgrade through Kies after all and you don’t exactly know how to do that, there’s a very handy step-by-step guide on T-Mobile.com.

Your T-Mo Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be upgraded to Android 4.0.4, software version T859UVLH6, meaning that you can expect the usual set of ICS changes, tweaks and improvements, including a redesigned new UI, but also improved battery life and speedier browsing. Several users are complaining of a couple of bugs and glitches that have come with the new software package, but hopefully these will be fixed soon.

Has anyone received the ICS upgrade OTA? How about through Kies?
