Buying a used smartphone online is always a risky business. It’s quite hard to know in what condition the device really is, so all you can really do is just hope that it won’t break down in the first week.

Swappa, the popular user-to-user marketplace for used mobile devices, understands these concerns. That’s why it has announced – in partnership with WarrantyLife — protection plans for smartphones purchased through their website.

The company is offering three simple plans that will set you back either $50 (protection up to $300), $60 (protection up to $500) or $70 (protection up to $1000) and are valid for a period of one year.

The protection plans have you covered in case of a cracked screen from drops, water damage from any accidental spills and power surges. But Swappa won’t cover you in the event of a battery failure or leakage, intentional damage or abuse, software issues such as viruses or bricking, cosmetic damage not effecting functionality, or if your device gets lost or stolen.

Protection plans can only be purchased alongside a smartphone from Swappa and can’t be added to devices later on. The company also has a money-back guarantee policy that allows you to cancel the plan within 30 days of purchase and receive a full refund.

Currently only available for smartphones, Swappa also plans to offer protection plans for tablets and laptops shortly, but has not revealed exactly when they will be available.

So, what do you guys think? Would you consider buying a protection plan with a used smartphone?
