Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 unboxing and first impressions

We don’t normally do unboxing and first impression videos for tablets, but when the Samsung Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 made its way to us, it was too exciting not to. So, what’s it like unboxing and taking a first look at a 12.2-inch tablet? Let’s find out!

Unboxing

The massive size of this tablet hits home right away, considering how the box barely fit in the frame, even with a fairly wide lens on the camera. Sliding out the box cover reveals the huge 12.2-inch tablet in all its glory, with a small tab at the top to pull the device out. Even with a device with such a big canvas and hefty weight, you still only have that small tab to separate it from everything.

Removing the tablet gives us a look at what’s inside the box, which is basically what you’d expect. You get some replacement pins for the S-Pen tip, an USB 3.0 charging cable similar to what you get with the Galaxy Note 3, an instruction manual, and the AC adapter plug. And that’s about it.

Because it’s such a big device, to get a better handling on things, I’ve had to back up from the camera a bit, to be able to fit the Note Pro 12.2 in the frame. Keeping in line with Samsung’s new design language that started with Galaxy Note 3, you get the plastic back with a faux leather look, complete with the fake stitching around it. On the front is the expansive display, surrounded by a sizable bezel that is a little less than an inch. And of course, the “standard” physical home button and capacitive buttons complete the front of the tablet. The button layout is pretty typical of tablets with large displays, with the volume rocker and power button both at the top.

It doesn’t really have to be mentioned that the Galaxy NotePRO 12.2 isn’t a device for one-handed operation at all. Powering the tablet on opens up the original TouchWiz layout, with the elements looking larger, because of the big display. Swiping to the left takes you to the new Magazine UX that we were very impressed by when we first saw it at CES 2014.

I will be doing an in-depth Feature Focus for this new UI shortly, in order to show you what it can really do and to explain the various widget options available, along with their functionality when put into the very large grid-like layout.

There’s certainly a period of adjustment when it comes to getting used to a tablet of this size. For example, when you pull out the S-Pen, it takes a while to figure out a comfortable grip to hold up the tab while using the stylus. This tablet is really more better for table top use, so a good kickstand is definitely something to check out. Once you do get a grip on the device, however, you’ll be greeted with all the same S-Pen functionality that we’ve seen with the Galaxy Note 3, including the Air Command menu.
