Older Acer Iconia devices won’t see Jelly Bean

Acer Iconia Jelly Bean Update

Waiting for your older Acer Iconia to make the jump from Android 4.0 ICS to Jelly Bean? Today isn’t your lucky day. According to Italian website NotebookItalia, an Acer UK representative has already stated that several older Iconia devices will not get an official upgrade to Android 4.1. The models that won’t see Jelly Bean include the A100, A200 and A500.

Why no Acer Iconia Jelly Bean update for older dual-core Iconia Tabs? Your guess is as good as ours. Previously there were reports that a Jelly Bean port was already in testing phases for some of the older model Iconia devices. It is possible that Acer ran into issues with getting Jelly Bean to perform on these products.  No matter what the reason is for the lack of an upgrade path, this is disappointing news for dual-core Iconia users everywhere.

The good news is that ROMs already exist to unofficially bring Jelly Bean to these older models. Unfortunately, many of these attempts aren’t quite functional enough to be used as daily drivers. I wouldn’t worry too much. If a fully-functioning Jelly Bean experience on older Iconia tablets is possible, you can bet that the XDA Developers will eventually deliver.

As a proud Acer Iconia Tab A100 owner, I’m right there with the rest of the somewhat disappointed Iconia fans. I guess all that is left now is to wait patiently for a working ROM.

Has anyone used the custom Jelly Bean ROMs for older Iconia devices? What was your experience like?
