Moto Z Droid Edition owners will get 2 years of unlimited, original quality Google Photos storage

The Moto Z announcement turned a lot of heads. The modular design was exciting, the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack was definitely something different, and Ashton Kutcher was there, kind of. Now that the dust has begun to settle on the announcement, some smaller details are beginning to surface about the device. Among them is the promise of two years worth of Google Photos where you can upload the “original quality” photos instead of the “high quality” versions Google lets free users upload now.

Moto Z Droid Edition Google Photos
According to Motorola’s website, the promotion is for anyone who buys the Moto Z Droid Edition, which begs the question of whether or not this will be included with the regular, non-Droid Edition version of the device. It could go either way, since the Droid Edition and the regular, unlocked Moto Z are identical in every way, but it’s also possible that this is a US (or Verizon) only promotion. Even so, the Droid Edition of the Moto Z is going to be a Verizon exclusive only for a limited time so others may have a chance to pick it up as well.

As for the promotion itself, there are two ways of looking at it. The first, obviously, is that this is two years of unlimited backup to a cloud service which is rare and awesome. Google’s high quality backups aren’t bad, but it’s better to keep the originals if you have that opportunity. On the other hand, this space can only be used for photos and videos which may make some people pine for the more typical promotion of 500GB of free Google Drive space for two years. We also imagine that getting all of those photos and videos off of Google Photos when the two years are up is going to be rough, especially if you’re a particularly active shutterbug. That is assuming you don’t just buy the Google Drive space to keep it going.

Nitpicks aside, this is a fun little offer that accompanies what appears to be a fun looking device. The camera looks fantastic on paper and let’s face facts, all free cloud storage is good cloud storage. If you have a different opinion, tell us about it in the comments!
