Aside from its price tag, another major selling point for the Kindle Fire is its stock browser–the Amazon Silk Browser– that promises users an ultra fast and ultra smooth browsing experience. The Silk Browser has gained the interest of some users and some had wondered if it can be used by other devices aside from the Kindle Fire (some are even thinking of having it on their PC).

Apparently, the Amazon Silk Browser can and does work on other Android devices. Thanks to the efforts of XDA Developers member TyHi, users of other Android devices can now use a port of the Silk Browser. The port, however, works only on rooted devices. It generally involves sideloading of APK files and pushing a few binaries to the system directory of the target Android device.

Requirements

To be able to install Amazon Silk to your Android device, you will need to:

• root your device first.
• download the Silk package from here or here.
• ensure that the Root Explorer app is installed on your device.

Instructions

Follow these instructions very carefully to avoid any damage to your device and in order for the installation to be successful. Any damage or loss of data to your device as a result of following this guide will not be our liability. Here’s how to port the Silk Browser into your device:

1. Extract the contents of the Silk package file to your computer.
2. Connect your device to your computer via USB cable.
3. Copy the extracted files to your device’s SD card.
4. Run Root Explorer on your device.
5. Navigate to the folder where the extracted files are.
6. Select and copy all the files in the /lib folder (i.e., the extracted files) and transfer the files to /system/lib in your device’s internal storage. You may need to mount /system/lib with R/W permissions to be able to copy files into it.
7. Go back to the folder where the extracted files are.
8. Open the App folder.
9. Install all of the APK files located inside the App folder.
10. Navigate to the /data/app directory. You will find com.amazon.cloud9-1.apk in this directory. Copy this file to the /system/app directory on your phone’s internal storage.
11. Reboot your device.
