‘Insider’ confirms HTC’s phablet … or does he?

HTC Phablet Insider
Rumors regarding am HTC phablet bound for Verizon have been going around since April, but it was only when the benchmark result for HTC’s gargantuan smartphone leaked out in July that I’ve personally started to hope that this is an actual device — one that will reach the consumer market as fast as possible and without losing any of its rumored specs.

The reason? A HTC smartphone with a 5 inch display running at a 1080p resolution (1920 by 1080 pixels) and carrying Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC (one that packages together a 1.5 GHz quad-core Krait processor alongside an Adreno 320 GPU) could be the best solution for the Taiwanese manufacturer to recover from it’s current shady financial situation.

Those of you that are unfamiliar with the SoC (System on a Chip) universe should know that Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC benchmark results show that Qualcomm has a true winner with its first quad-core processor, while the Adreno 320 GPU has been benchmarked and proven to be almost as fast as the GPU inside the new Apple iPad. And since most smartphones will be running a resolution that’s under the 2048 by 1566 pixels that the retina display on the new iPad uses, real-world performance will be significantly improved.

According to HTC-Source, an insider source (pun intended, genius!) has confirmed that the HTC 6435LW is a real device — one that will feature a 480 pixel per inch (PPI) density on a five-inch display. However, there are many inconsistencies in the data that HTC Source is feeding us, as I’m about to explain.

Screen Resolution Mixup?

For starters, HTC Source’s insider claims that the Verizon-bound HTC phablet will have a PPI density of 480, although simple math dictates that a 1920 by 1080 resolution (this the actual value for a full HD resolution) on a 5 inch display gives you a PPI density of 440.

Then there’s the fact that many are talking about a possible 1794 by 1080 resolution on the HTC phablet’s display (and this is how HTC Source have arrived to the fact that the HTC phablet should have a PPI of roughly 418). Many have agreed to this being a possible resolution for HTC’s upcoming phablet by adding the 126 pixels in width that are usually occupied by the navigation bar in Android 4.0 and above (the resolution thus reaching 1920 by 1080).

However, the actual resolution (and thus the PPI) can only be calculated with those 126 pixels added to the equation, especially since the navigation bar disappears when certain apps go into full screen (say YouTube for example). In addition, according to Google, “the navigation bar is present only on devices that don’t have the traditional hardware keys” (such as the Galaxy Nexus), although leaked photos of HTC’s phablet clearly show that there are capacitive buttons at the bottom.

Just speculation

The way I see it, all this information is based on mere speculation, probably all of them based on the benchmark result that leaked back in July. It’s a bit disappointing to see that some exponents of the tech media trying to draw in traffic by faking insider “info.”

Back to what HTC Source reports, the insider has supposedly confirmed that the mysterious HTC phablet will use 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, with no SD card slot, and a non-removable battery. As far as I’m concerned, the internal storage and battery info could well turn out to be true, although I’m absolutely confident that the HTC phab will carry either 1GB or 2GB of RAM (and I stand by the latter).

Finally, the HTC fanblog mentions that the same insider source has confirmed that the HTC phablet will be commercialized under the Droid Incredible X branding. I’ve talked to an “insider source” of my own, and she has confirmed that HTC and Verizon will go for the HTC Droid Phaboulicious branding. (OK, I’m just kidding. I have no such sources.)
