Google steps up Nexus 7 advertising another notch, adds home page ad placement

The Nexus 7 tablet has been a smash hit so far, but Google isn’t content with letting things lay as they are. Nexus 7 advertising started with a popular commercial that focused on a father and son camping in the back yard and now advertising has even hit the home page of Google.

While many sites and search engines on the web clutter up their front pages with ads and extra information, Google has almost always opted to keep their front page free of clutter and advertising alike. Though this isn’t the first time that advertising has arrived on the front page, it is certainly a rare occasion.

Why does it matter? If there was ever a more coveted spot for advertising, the front page of Google would be it. Putting up the Nexus 7 makes a pretty clear statement: Google is no longer going to stand idly by as ‘second place’ in the tablet space. Nexus 7 goes a long way in heating up the tablet wars, but aggressive advertising can certainly bring Google the rest of the way.

At the moment, it’s hard to say if this is going to be a long-standing campaign or merely a short-term advertising move. What we do know is that Nexus 7 is likely just the beginning of a more aggressive tablet marketshare campaign from Google’s part.
