Galaxy Note 10.1 ad features James Franco – is Samsung bringing more movie stars to commercials?

Earlier this year, we’ve seen a variety of iPhone 4S Siri-related commercials that starred regular Janes and Joes doing regular daily things and using the voice-based assistant to help out. That’s until Apple started to issue a series of Siri ads featuring a variety of movie stars including Zooey Deschanel, Samuel L. Jackson, John Malkovich and Martin Scorsese.

The gist was the same though, performing daily chores with Siri’s help, although this time around we were talking about irregular Janes and Joes.

Now, Samsung has released an almost 3-minute video – it’s slightly larger than your 30- or 60-second TV ad – featuring James Franco, who apparently directed the clip himself, or so he says during the video. Of course, this isn’t the first time Franco appears in a Samsung video, is it?

Is Samsung copying Apple (again?) by bringing out well-known movie figures to advertise its brand new products?

Earlier today we took a look at a teaser video for the August 29 Unpacked event that will star the Galaxy Note 2 phablet, and one could argue that a movie star was also present in it, German director Wim Wenders, although his probably not comparable with Martin Scorsese for example. Samsung has also used David Beckham, famous English football player, in previous Galaxy Note and olympic ads, and while he’s not quite the movie star, you can’t argue those ads were not a fun thing to watch.

Franco’s job is to make the Galaxy Note 10.1 look good, focusing on its multitasking abilities, and we’re certainly interested to see how TV ads based on the clip will look like. Moreover, we’re definitely interested to see whether Samsung will hire other movie and TV stars to promote some of its existing device, including the most recently launched smartphones and tablets.

Are you buying a gadget just because your favorite TV/movie star is endorsing it in a TV ad?
