DreamWorks preparing its own Android tablet, slated to arrive in the spring

It looks like DreamWorks is jumping into the tablet game with its first Android tablet, the 8-inch DreamTab. The tablet hardware itself will be built by Fuhu, the company behind the popular Tegra 3-powered Nabi children’s tablet series.

The DreamTab will not only include DreamWorks-related content and educational apps, but reportedly it will also be updated on a near-daily basis with new things to do and see from DreamWorks. Aside from pre-loaded education experiences, the DreamTab will also include animated content made directly by DreamWorks. Some of this will include short clips and games, others could be basic animations like Madagascar’s famous penguins waving goodbye to you when you shut down the tablet.

There will even be drawing lessons included from DreamWorks animators, and the tablet itself will feature ‘the same stylus technology that DreamWorks artists use to make movies’.

Curiously enough, there will even be drawing lessons included from DreamWorks animators, and the tablet itself will feature “the same stylus technology that DreamWorks artists use to make movies”. This could mean the Nabi will either optionally offer a Wacom stylus, or could even come bundled with one.

This seems a pretty impressive feature to include in a tablet that is aiming for a price tag of around $300 or less, but again, we really don’t know the specifics here. If that’s not enough features for you, it looks like DreamWorks is also planning something some kind of Telepod-like technology, meaning you might be able to buy certain toys add have them unlock special content and apps.

So what kind of hardware can we expect from the DreamTab? Unfortunately, that’s yet to be revealed, other than DreamWorks claims the tablet will have “roughly the same computing power as an iPad” when used in parent mode. We also know that the tablet will not be locked down to just DreamWorks content, though it’s unclear whether or not we’ll actually get Google Play access.

IF DreamWorks and Fahu can really deliver something with a mid-to-high end tablet experience, custom kid’s content and stylus support for under $300 — this could certainly be a compelling option for families looking for a solid tablet experience without breaking the bank.

Only time will tell for sure whether or not they can actually live up to this hype, but we’ll find out soon enough: the 8-inch tablet is expected to arrive this spring, with a 12-inch model also said to be in the works. What do you think, interested in the idea of the DreamTab or not?
