While the Nexus phone series has a lot of enthusiast, there are few models that have achieved the same level of attention as the original Nexus 5. Thanks it large part to its highly affordable nature, it opened up the flagship Android experience to a lot of new users. Even all these years later it still remains a very capable and popular phone among some circles. That includes the modding ring.

Back in January, we wrote about how one person added a microSD card slot to their Nexus 5 with a bit of jerry-rigging. Now an XDA user by the user name of KApetz2 has went one step further, putting in 64GB of internal eMMC storage into the Nexus 5.

As many of you may be well aware of, the Nexus 5 was pretty lacking in storage space, offered in just 16 and 32GB flavors. This means KApetz2’s 64GB Nexus 5 is a unique one-of-a-kind ‘variant’. Even better, this isn’t just more storage, it should be faster than the eMMC 4.51 chip found in the original Nexus 5 as well.

So how did he go about it? First, he picked up a 64GB eMMC 5.0 chip for around $35 online. Next, he got out his soldering gun and introduced the chip to the motherboard. The last and most complicated part of the process was getting this chip to be recognized by the phone, which involved fixing the partition tables to allow support for the new 64GB mod.

As you can imagine, this wasn’t exactly an easy process, or at least it wouldn’t be for someone inexperienced with such hardware mods. After all, the slight misalignment of these parts could end up in breaking the phone completely.
