ASUS Transformer Book Duet 4-in-1 hands on preview: video

ASUS loves multi-functionality, remember last year’s Transformer Book Trio? Well, Josh Vergara has managed to get his hands on ASUS’s latest Dual OS laptop/tablet hybrid at this year’s CES.

The ASUS Transformer Book Duet touts 4-in-1 functionality, operating as either a Windows or Android laptop and tablet. This is achieved by support for Intel’s Dual OS Instant Switch technology, which is used to move between operating systems with the simple touch of a button. The changeover between Windows 8 and Android 4.2.2 takes just 4 seconds, vastly improving on the reboot times required by older dual-boot solutions.

The Transformer Book Duet is also a powerhouse in the hardware department, featuring a range of Intel processor options housed in the dock companion, including an i3 or i5, all the way up to the high-end i7 chip. But the more powerful processors will eat up the battery life, the 38WHr battery is estimated to last around 5 hours in Windows 8.1 and 6 hours in Android. The Transformer Duet also comes with Intel HD graphics and 4GB DDR3L 1600MHz RAM.

ASUS hasn’t skimped out on the storage either, with a 64 or 128GB solid state drive in the tablet itself, and up to a further 1TB worth of space in the docking station. The tablet features a 13.3inch IPS touchscreen, with a full HD display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The tablet part of this 4-in-1 measures 342.7 x 216.3 x 12.9mm, whilst the docking station measures 340.9 x 217.6 x 16mm. These two parts have a combined weight of roughly 1.9kg.

There’s also the usual array of extras, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 + EDR, a headphone jack, 1 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, 10/100Mbit/s LAN, an HDMI 1.4 output, and support for MicroSD cards.

ASUS looks like it’s build a solid device for those looking to combine work and play into a single unit. But there’s no information about how much the ASUS Transformer Book Duet will cost or an official release date yet.
