We don’t really know how they do it (and yeah, we’re a bit jealous), but the folks over at Tablet.bg seem to be masters at scoring tabs before anyone else. And way ahead of their official launches. Fortunately, they use their forces for good, so every time they get ahold of an unreleased gadget they turn it upside down and give the world their impressions.
This time around, it’s the Asus MeMo Pad 7 that’s somehow fallen in the grubby hands of the Bulgarians, being thoroughly reviewed and… only partially praised. The $149 tab looks like a feeble Nexus 7 relative hardware-wise, although from a design standpoint you’ll have a very tough time distinguishing one from the other.
As expected, the single-core 1 GHz CPU performed mediocre (at best) in most popular benchmark tests, being crushed by the Nexus 7, but also by Acer’s new Iconia B1. Still, the 7-incher from Asus was able to sail smoothly through a short Dead Trigger gaming session, which is impressive given the shooter’s usual thirst for power (and blood).
The display seems to be another so-so MeMo Pad 7 feature, though it is definitely not worse than that of the Iconia B1. Viewing angles are far from great due to the using of a TN matrix, but color reproduction and brightness are fairly nice (for a budget tablet, at least).
The software is as nice and smooth as you’d expect, and, while the Jelly Bean here is not as “clean” as on the Nexus 7, it’s only ever so slightly tweaked. As far as battery life is concerned, Simeon from Tablet.bg didn’t spend enough time with the 7-incher to give out any full verdicts, but one thing is clear – the autonomy is going to be much better than on Acer’s Iconia B1.
