Companies like Samsung and HTC avoided any major device announcements at this year’s MWC, giving some room for other OEMs, like Sony, ZTE, and ASUS, to shine. ASUS launched the third iteration of the PadFone, and also the Fonepad, a 7-inch Intel-powered tablet with voice-calling capabilities. While we expected an April release, the FonePad could be available in Europe later this month, with the device set to release in Russia, priced at  €265.

Here’s a quick recap of the specifications of the ASUS FonePad:

  • 7-inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution
  • 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor and PowerVR SGX540 GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8/16GB of memory, microSD support (up to 32GB)
  • 3-megapixel rear camera, 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera
  • HSPA+ and 3G support for voice calls
  • 4,270mAH battery
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

While the look of the FonePad is somewhat similar to the Nexus 7, the former features a beautiful aluminium body, and the addition of the telephony option might be interesting for some. Check out our first-look video of the ASUS FonePad from this year’s MWC:

I’m not entire sure why, but the European version of the ASUS FonePad comes without a rear camera. The price point is also slightly higher in this case, since the ASUS-recommended retail price for the Fonepad is €219, but the difference could be because of current exchange rates. If you were hoping to get your hands on the ASUS FonePad, it’ll be available in a store near you very soon (if you’re in Europe that is)!
