The French manufacturer Archos has a track record of releasing highly affordable Android tablets that deliver a great bang for the buck. The same goes for Platinum, the newest tablet series from Archos, which was first teased at CES last month, and today received an official release.

The new Platinum series groups three slates, the 8-inch Archos 80 Platinum, the 9.7-inch Archos 97 Platinum, and the super-sized Archos 116 Platinum, with its 11.6-inch display.

All three Platinum tablets share the same specifications, which include:

  • IPS display
  • A quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2GHz, 8-core GPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • Front and rear camera (unspecified resolution)
  • Mini-HDMI, microSD ports
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

In the press release announcing the new tablets, Archos emphasizes the fact that the new Platinums compare favorably with stalwarts like the Kindle Fire HD or the iPad and the iPad mini, “at a fraction of the cost”. Indeed the 8-inch model will cost just $199, the 9.7-inch model will go for $299, while the full HD Archos 116 Platinum will cost just $349.

Archos promises that the 80 Platinum and the 97 Platinum will be available starting this month, with the 116 Platinum slated for an April release. More details in the press release below.

Personally, I am impressed with Archos’ latest efforts and looking forward to the smartphones that the French company is rumored to release soon. What do you think?
