Android 4.1.2 comes to the Nexus 7, introduces landscape mode

Android 4.1.2

A new Jelly Bean update is rolling out to lucky Nexus 7 owners, starting today. Android 4.1.2 is an incremental upgrade, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important. Most of the changes have to do with bug fixes that improve stability and speed. There is also finally a way to move beyond portrait mode with the Nexus 7.

Up until now, Nexus 7 owners didn’t have access to a landscape mode on the home screen unless they were willing to utilize a minor hack or use a 3rd party tool to get the job done. While most 7-inch tablet users spend a great deal of the time holding their devices like they would a smartphone, it is still nice to have the option to use the tablet in whatever orientation you wish.

According to Android Open Source Project lead Jean-Baptiste, the new release should roll out today for those with pure AOSP builds of the mobile OS. Many users across the net have had positive success in getting Android 4.1.2 installed on the flagship Google tablet, though it isn’t showing up for everyone yet.

This is the only Jelly Bean device that officially has the upgrade, as of now. With that in mind, it is very likely only a matter of time before the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Xoom follow suite.

Any Nexus 7 owners get the upgrade yet? Any other noticeable changes beyond the new landscape mode?
