Today’s Amazon Kindle event is over, and man what a ride it was.

In the tablet world, Amazon’s aging Kindle Fire was threatened by Nexus 7 and the upcoming iPad Mini. In the e-reader universe, the Kindle was falling behind the competition without its own fronlit model.

What was Amazon’s answer to all that? A great show that makes it clear that Amazon is ready to fight any rival with full force. There have been many rumors surrounding this event, but even we couldn’t call everything that came out of the unveiling.

First we have the new $119 Kindle PaperWhite e-reader, with a fronlit display and its unique new “Time to Read” feature. What’s that all about? Basically the PaperWhite is smart enough to estimate how long it will take you to read a chapter, or even finish the whole book. The PaperWhite 3G will cost $179, while the current $79 Kindle has been slightly improved and priced at $69.

Next, we have the Kindle Fire announcements, probably the most exciting part of the entire press event. There are now four members to the Fire family. The first of these is an entry-level model that is simply a revamped Kindle Fire with double the RAM and a slightly faster processor that will retail for just $159.

Looking for something with more muscle behind it? Amazon has now unveiled the Kindle Fire HD, which comes in a 7-inch and 8.9-inch form factor. The Fire HD is priced at $199 and $299, respectively.

While the Fire HD doesn’t have Google Play it certainly offers access to a lot of content curated by Amazon. Among other specs and features, it also offers a TI OMAP 4470 processor  which Amazon claims can outperform the Tegra 3 without a problem.

If that’s not enough, the company has also announced the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE model priced at $499 that comes with a special Amazon 4G LTE Package that will set you back $49.99 each year.

What’s the biggest take away from the Amazon Kindle event? Amazon has taken its throne back as the King of e-readers. Additionally, the company has also reaffirmed its commitment to the tablet world with four new devices set to compete against the Google Nexus 7 and the iPad family.

Sure, the Fire HD might not be a full-featured Android tablet, but it’s no lightweight either.
