Backdrops is an above average option if you’re looking for good wallpapers. It features a variety of styles along with some modern features. For instance, you’ll be able to sign in with your Google account to sync wallpapers across devices. It’s a good start for collecting some good wallpapers. The only caveat is that there is a pro version that comes with exclusive wallpapers, and then additional paid content on top of that for more wallpaper packs. It’s not inherently bad, but it can be frustrating if you don’t know it’s coming. It’s one of the better wallpaper apps and it’s worth a shot.

Backgrounds HD has been around for a long time and is one of the most popular wallpaper apps on this list. It’s considered good because it has a metric ton of wallpapers to choose from. Updates in 2015 and 2016 have modernized the design and 30 categories helps keep their massive collection in line. There are a variety of resolutions supported so you may have to wade through some lower quality images to find the really high quality stuff. MTP Ringtones and Wallpapers is an all-in-one type of app. Along with wallpapers, you can also find ringtones, alarm tones, notification tones, and other stuff. It boasts a collection of HD photos in the thousands. Like other apps in this category, you can save favorites, search through categories, and set the wallpaper from within the app. It’s one of the more simple wallpaper apps out there. That makes it good if you don’t need a lot of bells and whistles. Still, we wish their selection were a little larger.

Muzei Live Wallpaper is one of the more unique wallpaper apps. It also creates wallpapers based on your device’s screen resolution. That means it’ll be crisp which is what you’re looking for. The name of this app is pretty lame, but thankfully it makes up for it by having a good selection of wallpapers. What makes this app special is that it will only show you wallpapers based on your screen resolution. Therefore, those with 1080p displays won’t see 540×960 images. If you’re rocking a 2K screen or greater, you won’t be bothered by lower resolution stuff. One of the more difficult things to do is find good 2K and 4K wallpapers since a lot of wallpaper apps don’t have that many yet. This gets the bric-a-brac out of the way so you can find those crispy wallpapers. It’s one of the best free wallpaper apps out there.

Wallpapers by Google

Wallpapers by Google is probably the most simple of all the wallpaper apps on this list. It shows a smaller selection of wallpapers, but they are all high resolution. You can access additional wallpapers using Google+, Google Earth, and other sources that Google calls “partners”. You also get additional features if your device is running Android 7.0 Nougat or higher. It’s not the most robust option on the list, but it is completely free and taps into some pretty good sources for wallpapers.

Wonderwall

Wonderwall is one of the lesser-known wallpaper apps on Android. It doesn’t boast massive collections like Backgrounds HD or Cool Wallpapers, but the collection it does boast is hand picked by the developers. They’re mostly things like photography and abstract creations. All of the images are high resolution and should fit well on most screens. Some additional features include the ability to auto-set wallpapers on your device, submit your own photography to be featured in the app, and some other stuff. It’s also free to use with no advertising which is nice.

Zedge

Last on our list is the venerable Zedge. Zedge is probably the most popular app that offers ringtones, notification tones, alarm tones, and wallpapers. It has quite a large selection of all of those and we always manage to find some obscure stuff stashed in there somewhere. Wallpapers can be searched, sorted by category, and Zedge always has some that are picked out as featured when you open the app. The app isn’t perfect and features some of the more outrageous advertising we’ve seen. Their selections do include HD wallpapers and better, but there isn’t really a way to search to get rid of the lower resolution images. It’s a bit like the wild west, but it’s a good app for those looking around.

Bonus: Google Search

Of course, if none of these apps work for you, then you can always turn to the venerable Google Search. There is a whole section for images there and you can search for backgrounds, wallpapers, and even add in variables to find the types that you want. Let’s face it, Google’s image search has more images than pretty much all of these apps combined which makes it a great option. The only issue is that downloading images can be a pain sometimes and you’ll have to set them manually each time. The best reason to use a Google Search is because you can search for resolutions (2K, 4K, 1920×1080, vertical wallpapers, horizontal wallpapers, etc) which helps filter out a lot of the nonsense that you might not want. It’s a good fallback plan if none of these apps have what you’re looking for!
